Manchester: loud bang and flames seen from plane after take off

A Jet2 plane was seen over Greater Manchester after witnesses heard a “loud bang” and “flames” shortly after take off.

The plane, said to be a Boeing 757, has been flying over the area since taking off from Manchester Airport on Monday afternoon. An online flight tracker shows the plane flying in circles.

Jet2 said the plane was on a “routine test flight” when it reported a minor failure, but then landed safely. Witnesses said they heard “booming” noises around 3 p.m., while one said the force of the noise made his house shake.

Helen Whatmough, who said she lived under the flight path near the airport, said she saw flames coming from the plane’s engine.

She wrote on Twitter: “It was scary to hear and see flames coming out of the right engine! I have never heard of anything like it before living under the #manchesterairport flight path.

Another wrote: ‘Really loud noise in the Manchester Airport area around 3pm. The house was vibrating! I hope everything was going well ”.

A witness said he saw the engine “turn on him” as the plane took off.

A Jet2 spokesperson said: “One of our planes on a routine test flight followed the procedure and returned to Manchester Airport this afternoon, after the crew reported a minor failure.

“The plane has landed safely and will be thoroughly checked, as is standard practice. ”

A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident involving a Jet2 aircraft shortly after it left Manchester Airport for a routine test flight earlier this after -midday (Monday August 10). The plane returned to Manchester Airport as a precaution and landed safely.
