The work will last nine days

Manchester city center tram stops are to be closed for the next nine days, operator Metrolink said.

Critical maintenance work is underway and is expected to cause temporary disruption to downtown services.

Market Street and Shudehill stops will close and trams will not run between Victoria and Piccadilly Gardens.

Services between St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens will not be affected.

The work will take place at the corner of High Street and Market Street outside of Debenhams and access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

Danny Vaughan, Director of Metrolink at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “To minimize any impact on our customers, we will undertake this work before schools are fully back in September and with more and more people returning to work.

“Contractors will also be working around the clock to make sure they are completed as quickly as possible, minimizing any disruption to local downtown businesses. ”

“All city center stops are within walking distance of each other and walking routes will be signposted throughout the works, but passengers are advised to plan their trip in advance and allow more time if possible. “
