Man Utd transfer news: United launched a surprise investigation into Tottenham target Matt Doherty | Football | sport

Manchester United have reportedly launched a surprise investigation for Wolves full-back Matt Doherty. The Republic of Ireland international is set to complete a stint at Tottenham this weekend before joining his new teammates after the international break.

Doherty has had two impressive Premier League campaigns since Wolves sealed a top-flight return in 2018.He has been one of the mainstays of Nuno Espirito Santo and has spent more than ten years at the club since joining Bohemians in 2010 for £ 75,000.

Tottenham have struck a deal worth around £ 15million and he will become the club’s fourth summer signing alongside fellow new boys Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Alfie Devine and Joe Hart.

Doherty was Jose Mourinho’s first target at right-back and is just as comfortable at back, where he thrived for Wolves.

Doherty was reportedly persuaded to stay at Wolves for another year as they reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

United then signed Wan-Bissaka in a £ 45million deal with Crystal Palace after his remarkable rise to power in south London.

Doherty was on vacation in Sardinia following the 1-0 loss to Sevilla, but has now returned to the UK to secure his transfer to Tottenham.

He is due to undergo a medical examination this weekend before joining Stephen Kenny’s Irish side ahead of the Nations League matches with Bulgaria and Finland.

Tottenham are expected to miss out on Serge Aurier after the deal is done.

The Ivorian is in talks with AC Milan over a deal despite interest from Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen.

Max Aarons was the board’s preferred choice at right-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, Mourinho reportedly raised concerns about the player’s height before Doherty was named as an official target.
