Kane over Sancho claim made by former United manager

René Meulensteen believes his former club Manchester United should aim for an elite striker like Harry Kane ahead of Jadon Sancho.

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly ready to agree to a compromise on their Sancho demands.

The Bundesliga side are adamant that they will not give up their £ 108million valuation for the England star, which United will struggle to pay off in one go this summer.

United had a prepaid £ 70million package in place, with the rest in the form of add-ons and payouts, which include bonuses for winning the Premier League and Champions League.

Still, Dortmund don’t want their income affected by how Sancho is doing at United, but Meulensteen believes United should aim for a prolific goalscorer this summer.

He told talkSPORT: “They have to resolve and clarify the position of the goalkeepers first, because now there is a debate over De Gea and the rumors with Schmeichel, but Henderson is also there.

“So this has to be resolved to be sure it’s clear. People are on De Gea’s back, but he’s still a very good goalkeeper; he’s had a few failures this season, he needs to sort that out.

“They also need someone next to Harry Maguire to reinforce this [defence]. “They bring in Jadon Sancho, but more than anything I would have gone for a more prolific striker, someone like Harry Kane.

“There is so much creativity coming from the midfield with [Bruno] Fernandes, [Paul] Pogba, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial… they can all contribute to the goal.

” More [they need] someone in the middle who will score over 25 goals. This will close the gap for United. “
