It’s an open secret that Manchester United are hoping to sign Jadon Sancho this transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer determined to take him on. That hasn’t stopped the Norwegian and Ed Woodward from putting together a list of alternatives, however. And, of all the names that have been linked to a move to Old Trafford, Memphis Depay would make the most sense.
United are currently in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund determined to secure a deal for less than the Bundesliga giants’ massive £ 108million asking price.
But, behind the scenes, they’ve also compiled a list of alternatives.
Schalke star Rabbi Matondo is on the list, the 19-year-old impressive in Germany and catching the attention of the Wales national team.
Argentina winger Thiago Almada has also been signed after scoring four goals and recording one assist in 22 appearances this season.
And Kingsley Coman is also an alternative, with United believing the Bayern Munich star are willing to move to Old Trafford if he is allowed to leave the Allianz Arena.

In the time since, however, Depay has done well away from the Premier League – establishing himself as one of the best attacking players in Ligue 1.
Injuries have hit the 26-year-old hard this season, but he’s still impressed, scoring nine goals and recording two assists in 13 appearances.
He was involved in 20 goals in 36 games the previous year, scoring 10 and assisting 10 as well.
And, in his first full season in France, he scored 19 goals in 36 matches.
United want Sancho because of his scoring prowess and creative instinct, believing he can propel the club to the top of the Premier League.
But Depay would be a valid alternative. And, what’s more, the Red Devils can sign him easily anytime they want.

Lyon boss Juninho confirmed earlier in the year that United have priority over Depay, having inserted a buyout clause in their contract when he left three years ago.
« Manchester [United] has priority if several clubs are lining up to buy it, ”he said.
“But we haven’t received any offers so far. He is really happy at the moment in Lyon. He deserves the armband like the others.
“Rudi (Garcia) will make his decision soon. He is a technical leader. We will discuss a contract extension by the end of the year. ”
Matondo, Almada and Coman would all be likely to put United back financially if forced to sign an alternative to Sancho.
But Depay would be straightforward and, having flopped at Old Trafford before, would no doubt appreciate the chance to come back and prove his critics wrong.
