Madeleine McCann’s lawyer suspects Christian Brueckner that his client “will never speak to investigators” because he has “nothing to hide”.Friedrich Fulscher defended his client’s silence on the allegations – claiming it was his fundamental right.

“The prosecutor’s office must prove that a suspect has committed a crime, not the suspect must prove that he did not,” Fulscher said.

“Before our client starts to cooperate with the prosecutor’s office, you can order holy water as a long drink in hell. ”

German prosecutors believe Brueckner, 43, is the man responsible for Madeline McCann’s disappearance in 2007.

Friedrich Fulscher denies his client had anything to do with the McCann case

They say a phone belonging to the career criminal was said to have been used near the Portuguese seaside resort at the time of her disappearance.

But Fulscher – who was hired by Brueckner two months ago – says he has yet to receive evidence of the phone call from detectives.

He also claimed that even though it was done by Brueckner, it did not prove he was guilty.

Fulscher said a recent search of his client’s property was “an act of sheer desperation”

“You cannot tell because of the fact that this cell phone was connected to this tower that it was standing near the apartment of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance,” Mr Fulscher told 9News.

“He could have been 20 kilometers away. ”

He added: “The media have described my client as a monster, when we speak he is very calm and friendly. ”

Dozens of agents descended on a housing estate Brueckner used to rent in Hanover on Tuesday, where they conducted a major search.

But Fulscher said it was aimed at “influencing” public opinion.

The lawyer said earlier that the excavation of the house was “an act of sheer desperation.”

They searched the site using sniffer dogs as well as penetrating radars and drones.

Brueckner is currently serving a prison sentence for drug offenses in a German prison and is due out in January.

He has yet to be convicted of raping a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005.

He has previously denied any involvement in the McCann case.
