Kevin Clark, de Candler, Caroline du Nord, had a hunch and went on a trip to find the latest prize in the $ 5 million Mega Cash scratch game.
“I had a really good feeling that it was going to be in the western part of the state,” Clark said, according to the NC Education Lottery.
Clark spent four hours going store to store, buying each $ 20 Mega Cash ticket, until he finally found the winner at a Stop N Go on US 70 in Swannanoa, NC.
“I scanned it with my phone and he told me to go see a retailer,” he says. “So I scratched it, and when I scratched it, I couldn’t believe it. I started to shake. And then I cried.
Clark claimed the prize on Monday, choosing to take the lump sum of $ 3 million rather than the $ 5 million in the form of an annuity of $ 250,000 per year for 20 years.
After taxes, Clark came home with about $ 2.1 million – not bad for four hours of work.
“I’m a simple man and I mow the grass,” Clark said. “But I’ve always been interested in real estate, so my biggest plans with the majority of the money is to invest in real estate and some small businesses. ”
In North Carolina, the money from the sale of scratch tickets is used to fund education in the state. Over the past year, the NC Education Lottery grossed the most money ever raised, $ 729.8 million – which funds things like repairs to schools, college scholarships, and support for the NC Pre-K free.
