Liberal Toronto MP resigns to lead Jewish human rights organization


Toronto MP Michael Levitt resigns from his seat as Liberal backbench MP to take up a post with a major Jewish human rights organization.As first reported in iPolitics, Levitt will become President and CEO of the Canadian Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies after representing the constituency of York Center since 2015.

“For those of us in elected office, politics can be incredibly intense, and it often becomes all-encompassing,” Levitt said in a note to his constituents.

“It has not been without consequences for those I love most, and while it is an incredible privilege to serve the people of York Center, I know deep down that the time has come for me to give the priority to the family and to come home. physically and mentally. ”

Levitt is currently Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

He defeated Tory Mark Adler in 2015 when the Trudeau Liberals launched a wave of support for a majority government and were re-elected in 2019.

Levitt said he informed the Speaker of the House that his last day would be September 1.

His resignation will trigger a by-election which will be the first to take place since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
