Laura is expected to hit Texas and Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane

Tropical Storm Laura is now a hurricane, and it’s expected to grow even more powerful as it swirls towards Louisiana and Texas.

The storm passed over Cuba and the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday morning (August 25), turning into a hurricane even as the scattered remnants of Tropical Storm Marco moved away from their Louisiana landing site. Laura is expected to recover energy from the warm waters of the Gulf in the coming days, then land as a Category 3 “major hurricane” – the first of 2020 – with wind speeds of at least 178 km / h, according to National Hurricane Center (NHC).
