Flyweight contender Joanne Calderwood was taken to a local hospital when she passed out backstage after her fight with Jennifer Maia on Saturday night at UFC Vegas 5.
UFC President Dana White first broke the news during the UFC Vegas 5 post-fight press conference. According to Calderwood manager Danny Rubenstein, the Scottish fighter is suddenly passed out as she sat, and her head coach and fiance John Wood caught up with her before she could touch the ground.
Calderwood was then taken to hospital for treatment.
“She’s fine now,” Rubenstein told MMA Fighting via text message. “She was being examined in the medical room and passed out while sitting down. John grabbed her, they laid her down and took her on a stretcher.
“The heart rate dropped on the way but has stabilized now. She woke up in the hospital with Wood.
Calderwood had suffered a submission loss to Maia in his fight after being caught in an armband in the first round.
As of now, Calderwood is still being treated at the local hospital, but it’s unclear what prompted her to pass out behind the scenes.
