Former Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has said he will stay at the club for at least another season if he is in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s place.

Aubameyang scored on either side of the break at Wembley on Saturday night to help Arsenal defeat Chelsea and win the FA Cup for a record 14th time.

The brace took Aubameyang to 29 goals in all competitions for the campaign, but there remains uncertainty over the forward’s future, with less than 12 months remaining on his contract in north London.

It is understood the Gunners might be tempted to take advantage of the Gabon international if he decides not to put pen to paper on a new deal this summer.

Asked about speculation about Arsenal captain, Wilshere said talkSPORT: “It’s huge for the club that they keep him. You can see what it brings.

“I was there when he signed and right away from the first training session you knew he was world class. He scores goals with his left and right foot, he can beat a man.

“I had the chance to play with a few players like that, but he was one of the best.

“If I were him? Arsenal are a huge club. He’s the captain, the fans love him, he has the respect of the whole club.

“If I were him I would stay, but it’s easy for me to say it. Look, like I said, it’s important that they keep him because he’s their man of choice, he’s their best player, he’s their leader.

“When the team is down, everyone expects him to do something and he invents the merchandise.

Wilshere admits he was surprised when Arsenal spent a lot on the ‘world class’ striker in 2018.

“I only played with Aubameyang for six months,” Wilshere added.

“It was almost a shock because at Arsenal we weren’t used to spending £ 60million on a world class player.

And there were rumors and all of a sudden it happened and he was there.

‘In his first game he scored [against Everton] and we all knew he was special. He’s definitely up there.

Wilshere says he was “surprised” by Mesut Ozil’s absence from the side, considering the German would be “amazing” to feed balls to Aubameyang.

“As far as his ability as a footballer goes, I loved playing with him,” said the West Ham midfielder.

“He’s one of my favorite players to play with. He would give you the ball at the right time, at the right pace.

So I’m surprised he doesn’t play, but I don’t know what’s going on there.

“There must be something we don’t know because I don’t see why he isn’t playing in terms of football ability.

Especially with Aubameyang the type of player he is, you can imagine Ozil sitting behind him feeding him balls. It would be amazing.

“It’s obviously something we don’t know. I am on [Mikel] Arteta definitely has a plan and he’s putting it into practice.

“I’m sure we’ll find out in the next few weeks what’s going on.
