In addition to other celebrities who spoke out about her bad behavior, people who worked behind the scenes also spoke about abuse and verbal abuse. Many people were surprised by these revelations. However, other people realized that there had been incidents in the past that could have revealed the real ellen. Was Ellen mean from the start?
Who is Sofia Vergara?Sofia Vergara has worked in television for almost as long as DeGeneres. She made her Univisión debut in the 1990s before taking on roles in English in the 2000s.
In 2009, she was cast for the role of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC Modern Family sitcom, and from there, her fame exploded. In 2012, she became the highest paid actress on television and continued to receive a huge salary for her acting work.
However, Vergara’s story is bigger than her acting. Vergara is from Colombia, a country that has faced political conflict and violence for years. Although Vergara’s family is relatively well-off, that doesn’t mean she’s never faced hardships.
In 1998, Vergara’s older brother, Rafael, was killed in a kidnapping attempt. This murder has never been solved.
Either way, Sofia Vergara took this as a sign to stay and do her job in the United States, where she would be safer. Although Vergara does not speak frequently of her brother, she has spoken of her grief and pain on occasion, such as in a recent episode of America has talent.
Less than five years later, Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Fortunately, she was able to have her thyroid removed and the cancer did not spread or cause other problems. But there are complications that come with having a thyroid removed, and Vergara has had to keep abreast of medications and frequent doctor visits to ensure her continued health.

Vergara has been a regular guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Her first appearance was in 2010. Vergara’s native language is Spanish, and although her fluency in English is strong, her voice demonstrates her Colombian heritage. Because of this, DeGeneres – the two are both spokespersons for Cover Girl and have appeared in commercials together – asked Vergara to do a public prank involving her heavy accent.
This isn’t the only time DeGeneres has used Vergara’s accent for comedy. In another episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres jokingly “taught” Vergara’s English words, even though Vergara is fluent in English. In other clips, DeGeneres poked fun at the way Vergara pronounced certain words and mimicked the pronunciations on her face.
Although these incidents have spread over the years, they show a trend. And after the revelations that DeGeneres was less kind and sane than she presented herself, Vergara fans have looked back and are empowered to voice their concerns about how DeGeneres made jokes about the accent of Vergara.
Vergara has a sense of humor about her accent. However, when put together, the clips with DeGeneres and Vergara appear to show DeGeneres mocking Vergara about her accent, not her.
Fans pointed out, “If someone said these things in real life, no one would laugh.” They also said the way DeGeneres joked about Vergara’s accent was more “cringeworthy” than anything else.
In these clips, many people saw a white American making jokes at the expense of a Latina woman’s accent. It’s also a privileged, deaf joke – not to mention petty, the antithesis of DeGeneres’ “kind” brand – given that Vergara owes no one fluent English, as she is fluent in her native language.
Whether DeGeneres holds racist views is debatable. She has criticized President Donald Trump for his anti-immigration policies in the past, but she has not said anything about how she herself has treated Vergara, an immigrant.
Even though DeGeneres has said she was against people “being treated unfairly, not equal or – worse – ignored,” these past episodes in combination with the ongoing investigation have led many fans to view her as a hypocrite. If anything, it sheds light on how celebrities (and people) can champion certain social causes, while still having problematic views.
