The report comes nearly two months after allegations that Russia was paying bounties to Taliban fighters for killing Americans in Afghanistan. Donald Trump dismissed the reports as a “hoax”, but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that he had warned his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov that there would be “a huge price to pay” if Moscow paid such bonuses. The Pentagon has said it will investigate the Russian bounty reports but has so far failed to come to a conclusion on that investigation.
