Lazio forward Ciro Immobile scored his 36th goal of the season on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Napoli to tie the record for most goals in Serie A.
The 30-year-old Italy international appealed after 22 minutes to equal Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain’s record of 36 goals, set while playing for Napoli in the 2015-16 season.
Immobile also wins the European Golden Boot for continent’s top scorer this season, having surpassed Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski’s 34 total in midweek.
Fourteen of his goals came from the penalty spot, as Lazio finished the season in fourth place, earning a return to the Champions League.
This is the third time Immobile has won the title of top scorer in Italy after 2013-14, when he scored 22 goals for Torino, and in 2017-18 when his 29 goals for Lazio saw him share the honor with Mauro Icardi of Inter Milan.
Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on top scorer “Capocannoniere” for Italy’s top scorer, as he rested for Juventus’ final game, a 3-1 loss to Roma.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, 35, finished second with 31 goals.
