How Chinese Tencent quietly built a global empire

With a valuation of nearly $ 700 billion (£ 536 billion), Tencent is the flaming star of the social media galaxy in China, drawing almost the entire country into its orbit with its super app WeChat.WeChat, used by 1.2 billion people, has become the primary way for Chinese people to buy, chat, and pay for services. It combines services similar to Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Venmo in one place, making it the go-to app for almost everything.

But Tencent’s sphere of influence does not end there. Flying under the radar, he has invested in all areas of the global digital economy, with a list of his biggest bets as a who’s who of tech giants: Tesla, Spotify, Snapchat and Reddit count him among his supporters. The same goes for Uber, Lyft, and hundreds of others.

It is also the largest game publisher in the world and works with American industry leaders like Activision and Electronics Arts. He owns a significant stake in the maker of Fortnite Epic Games and owns the developer of League of Legends Riot Games.
