Harry Maguire has been kicked out of the England squad after being given a suspended prison sentence in Greece.

The 27-year-old human rights defender was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts at bribery by a court on Syros island on Tuesday.

He was sentenced to 21 months and 10 days in jail, but it will be suspended as it was a first offense and the charges have been classified as misdemeanors.

Maguire, who is the Manchester United captain, had been included in the England squad by manager Gareth Southgate earlier today.

But Southgate decided to remove him from the team following the convictions.

Southgate said in a statement: “In light of tonight’s developments, I can confirm that I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England squad for the matches against Iceland and Denmark.

“As I said earlier today, I have reserved the right to review the situation. Having spoken to Manchester United and the player, I have made this decision for the benefit of all parties and taking into account the impact on our preparations for next week. ”

Sky News sports correspondent Martha Kelner said England’s abandonment of Maguire was “the biggest punishment of all”.

She added: “Gareth Southgate has been very complete in his support for Harry Maguire and said what he heard said was not the man he knows but that everything has changed in light of developments in this afternoon. “

Maguire, who was not present at the trial on the island of Syros, was convicted of assault, swearing in public and attempting to bribe a police officer.

He was arrested along with his brother and a friend after a fight broke out while on vacation in Mykonos over claiming his sister was injected with a suspected ‘date rape’ drug.

Manchester United said in a statement that Maguire “continues to firmly assert his innocence” and that the trial has given his lawyers “minimum time to digest the charges and prepare”.

They had asked the court to postpone proceedings on the incident, which happened last Thursday during a family getaway.

But the trial proceeded in the absence of the three defendants – Maguire, his brother Joe and their friend Christopher Sharman.

Joe Maguire was convicted of repeated bodily harm, violence against government officials and attempted bribery.

Sharman was convicted of insult, repeated bodily harm and violence against government officials.

Both were sentenced to 13 months in prison suspended for three years.

Speaking after the verdict, Yoannis Paradissis, the lawyer who attended the prosecution, told Sky News the victims are still awaiting an apology and are “appalled” by the footballer who tries to blame the police.

He also refuted the star’s claims that he did not know who the policemen were, adding: “They were taken to the front of the police station, there were police vehicles, the policemen showed their identity papers. .

“It’s a total lie that they didn’t understand. They were found guilty of verbally assaulting the policeman saying “f *** the police”. How can you tell this to someone who is not a police officer? ”

Maguire’s attorney, Alexis Anagnostakis, had previously told the court that two Albanian men approached her sister Daisy and gave her an unknown substance, which immediately passed her out.

Ashden Morley, a footballer friend since childhood, said his fiancee Fern Hawkins noticed Daisy’s eyes rolling in her head around midnight.

The group suspects that two Albanian men injected him with date-rape drugs, Mr Morley told court.

Plainclothes policemen intervened in an attempt to calm the situation when one of the defendants said “f ***, f *** police” and a policeman was beaten, prosecutors said at trial.

Lawyer: Maguire will not go “for sure” to prison

Once Maguire got to the police station, he said, “Do you know who I am? I am the Manchester United captain, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go, ”the court was informed.

But Mr Anagnostakis claimed that at the station, Maguire was punched in the leg by officers who told him: “Your career is over. ”

He pleaded not guilty to all three counts and spent two nights in detention after being arrested.

Maguire made 26 appearances for England, who face Iceland on 5 September and Denmark three days later in the UEFA Nations League.

The Southgate team have not played this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to the postponement of the European Championship until 2021.
