Harry Kane recalled how Mauricio Pochettino abruptly showed the door to Tottenham last quarter. The Argentine’s five-and-a-half-year reign on the north side of London ended in November after a prolonged period of poor results.

Pochettino had guided Tottenham to a first-ever Champions League final just six months before his sacking, but that mattered little.

“Mauricio said to me, ‘The president called me and said,’ May I speak? It will be a shame but you will have to pack your bags and leave this evening ”.

Pochettino was replaced by Jose Mourinho within 24 hours as Tottenham moved quickly to secure their next manager.

But the Tottenham chief dismisses the accusations that can often be leveled at him.

“The perception of me is that I am uncompromising, stubborn, indifferent and not ambitious,” says Levy. “A lot of this is unfair.

“They just don’t understand how difficult it is to get to this place where you improve the team.

“The engine of the club is the team and I hate it when you lose. It’s not something I can directly control – obviously I can influence by making the right decisions.

“But coming to that decision took a lot of heartache. My heart was telling me not to do it and my brain was telling me I had to do it.

“It was the most moving decision I had to make.”
