The 2021 Tour de France was due to start in Copenhagen, Denmark

The Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Copenhagen will now take place in 2022 after being put back by 12 months.

The famous road race was due to start in the Danish capital in 2021, but after Euro 2020 and the Tokyo Olympics were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was delayed to avoid a clash with football matches taking place in the city.

“I am happy that we were able to secure the start of a Danish tour in 2022,” Copenhagen Mayor Frank Jensen said on the organizing committee website.

“Many of us were looking forward to having the Tour de France in Denmark next year, and unfortunately we have to wait a bit longer.

There were supposed to be three stages in Denmark in the 2021 race, with a 13km time trial followed by two road stages before joining France.

Whether this route will stay the same remains to be confirmed.
