Germany and France are determined to prevent the United States from leading efforts to improve theWorld Health Organization.
A German government spokesperson said it was the United States’ decision to withdraw from the United Nations agency, so Germany and France did not see a mandate for the United States to lead the reform. The issue was discussed in an August 6 call from the Group of Seven Health Ministers.

France does not believe that a country which has announced its intention to leave the organization should be on the front line in an attempt to change it, according to a French official who asked not to be named because the discussions are private.
President Donald Trump announced in May that he was withdrawing the United States from the WHO, accusing it of being too respectful of China and of failing to provide specific information on the spread of the coronavirus. He also suspended the group’s funding.
This will create financial hardship for the international public health organization, as the United States has been its largest contributor, providing between $ 400 million and $ 500 million in assessed and voluntary contributions.
