Germany, France and Poland call for free and fair elections in Belarus

BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany, France and Poland are watching developments in Belarus with “great concern” ahead of this weekend’s presidential poll, they said in a joint statement on Friday, urging authorities to conduct elections in a free and fair manner.Thousands of opposition supporters gathered in Minsk on Thursday, challenging the crackdown by the government of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko ahead of the elections.

He faces the biggest challenge in years of his reign and accuses the protesters of being in cahoots with foreign backers to destabilize the country.
