France reports 3,602 new cases of coronavirus in past 24 hours

(Bloomberg) –France has reported 3,602 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours as infections rise across Europe.

While Saturday’s figure was lower than the 4,586 new cases reported by the government health office on Friday and the previous day’s four-month high, the number is still above levels since May.

Despite the increase in the number of cases, deaths remain well below those at the start of the year. Deaths have increased from nine to 30,512 in the past 24 hours.

France and its neighbors are grappling with a surge in infections as people travel on vacations and attend summer gatherings. Authorities are tightening measures to curb the spread, but are reluctant to resort to the sweeping closures imposed during the initial peak of the pandemic in March and April.

French President Emmanuel Macron said this week the damage from another national lockdown would be too great and the country will have to rely on targeted local restrictions. The nationwide lockdown earlier this year quelled the virus but sent the economy into its worst fall on record.

France is demanding that masks be worn in the bustling outer areas of cities such as Paris and Marseille, while Toulouse began enforcing the wearing of masks throughout the city on Friday. Face coverings will also become standard in most indoor work areas starting in September.
