Former Spanish king Juan Carlos flees to Dominican Republic


Disgraced former King Juan Carlos of Spain has fled the country to go into hiding with a wealthy family in the Dominican Republic, reports said on Tuesday.The ex-monarch – battling allegations of bribes and suspicious offshore accounts, not to mention lingering public resentment over several rumors of extramarital affairs – disappeared as a letter he wrote to his son, King Felipe VI, surfaced on Monday.

“Guided by the conviction to render the best service to the Spanish people, to their institutions and to you as king, I communicate my considered decision to move, at this time, out of Spain”, wrote Juan Carlos, 82 years old. , in the missive, which was posted on the Royal Family’s website.

The former king left the palace on Sunday, traveled to Portugal on Monday and flew to the Dominican Republic, according to Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

The royal – who took the throne from General Francisco Franco after the dictator’s death in 1975 – plans to spend the next few weeks with a family who made their fortune running sugar plantations, the newspaper said.

ABC News also reported Juan Carlos in the Dominican Republic, although another Spanish newspaper, El Confidencial, said he was still outside Lisbon in Portugal.

The former king is not officially under investigation and therefore is not a fugitive, according to reports.

He abdicated his throne in 2014 amid close scrutiny of his finances and after stories that he cheated on his long-suffering wife, then Queen Sofia.

He is accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes from Saudi Arabia for the construction of a high-speed railway by a group of Spanish companies – then of trying to hide the money in offshore accounts.
