Florida has the second highest number of coronavirus cases in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University.The Florida Department of Health reported 6,218 new cases of the virus and 228 new deaths on Friday. To date, over 557,300 cases and over 9,100 deaths have been reported. The majority of cases were from direct contact with someone else who had contracted the disease, according to state data.
In the past two weeks, the state has reported that there have been 8,399 cases of coronavirus in children under the age of 18. The most affected age group in this category were high school students, 14 to 17 years old, with more than 3,000 cases.
Coaches who are part of the association will also need to take a COVID-19 training course through the National Federation of High Schools.
A video on the course details page states that students should not share sports towels, clothing, shoes, or water bottles. He also recommends that coaches keep a log of everyone present and possibly require that students’ temperatures be taken. Anyone with a fever or cold symptoms within a 24 hour period should not be allowed to participate in sports.
The association said that this season schools will not have a minimum contest limit to be eligible for the State Series game. Schools have until Sept. 18 to opt out of the series and can form their own regional schedule after association approval, according to the FHSAA announcement.
District tournaments for fall sports are expected to start as early as Oct. 12, for volleyball and golf, and last until mid-December, according to the association.
High school football season kicked off Thursday in Utah with what appeared to be thesince the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Herriman High School allowed grandstands to fill up to 25% of their capacity, with assigned and socially distant seats and mandatory face masks.
