First day of school being finalized for thousands of York Region elementary students

TORONTO – The date of the first day of school is still pending for thousands of families in York Region. “I wish they had known by now because we’re taking about two weeks and that’s my concern, that we don’t know how to plan things,” said Esmeralda Newnham, whose daughter is entering second grade with the York Catholic District School Board.

The school board informs CTV News Toronto that the first elementary students will return to school on September 9. The council said classes will begin in a phased manner, but plans are still being finalized.

On September 10, York Region District School Board students in Grades 1-8 will return to school with a staggered start.

The courses will be placed in groups A and B and will follow alternately during the first four days, before the resumption of full regular courses on September 16.

Kindergarten students will be back on September 10, but kindergarten students won’t be back until next week, September 14. Again, half the class will be in person one day, then another for the first four days of school.

“You will have a smaller class, the teacher can work with the students, follow the routine, see how they walk around the room, go to recess, all in a positive way,” said Steven Reid, the associate. director of education to the board.

The board said it expects the groups to be created in alphabetical order so that families with more than one child attend school on the same day, and hopes principals will contact parents. with details early next week.
