And instead of removing the new video, Facebook gave it a warning tag and it will get less promotion by its algorithm, but it still allows people to see it on the platform. Facebook said it will also send an alert to those who have already shared the video, flagging the warning label on its accuracy.
The new video was shared on Facebook on Saturday, along with a caption saying, “It’s amazing, she’s blown away, I bet it’s going to be taken down!” ”
The 55-second clip was taken from a press conference in May when Pelosi answered questions from the press about Donald Trump’s comments about MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, with whom he had an argument about long time. Scarborough is a strong critic of the President.
Lead Stories, a member of Facebook’s independent fact-checking network, verified the post on Sunday, noting that “the digital slowdown made Pelosi appear to be intoxicated.” The post now includes a “partially false information” message, which will significantly limit the reach of the video on the platform, according to Facebook policies. People who shared the video will also receive a notification.
“The original video revealed [Pelosi] spoke and acted normally, ”Lead Stories wrote in their review of the manipulated video.
A Facebook spokesperson told the Hill that the video did not meet the grounds for removal, based on company policies.
“Following an incident over a year ago with a previous video of President Pelosi, we took a number of key actions, making it very clear to people on Facebook when a third-party fact checker determines that the content is false and updates our policy to make it explicit. the kind of manipulated media that we will remove, ”the spokesperson said.
“And, as always, when a video is found to be fake, its distribution is drastically reduced and people who see it, try to share it, or have already shared it see warnings alerting them that it is fake,” continued the spokesperson.
Pelosi’s office did not immediately return a request for comment from the Hill.
“This is Facebook garbage,” said Christine Pelosi, the MP’s daughter, in a tweet. “You @ChanZuckerberg and @sherylsandberg are taking advantage of bogus and vile attacks – and you must stop. Tell the truth: the video is completely fake. Pull it down! “
