EU military warning: Ireland must come out now as Macron and Merkel plot EU military wing | World | News

With the UK no longer a member of the bloc, the push to create a joint military force may be unstoppable, said Ray Bassett, Ireland’s former ambassador to Canada, Jamaica and the Bahamas. The warning was issued by Mr Bassett as part of his new book, Ireland and the EU Post Brexit, in which he considers Ireland’s place in the bloc after the UK leaves.

Mr Bassett strongly believes that Ireland should consider following the UK’s lead in planning for ‘Irexit’ and, during his book, accuses former Irish taoiseach Leo Varadkar, among others, of slavishly following the EU line in virtually every respect – while ignoring the warning signs. on the emerging ambitions of the bloc.Evaluating the EU’s position, Bassett said Brussels was motivated by “a growing detachment from the United States and resentment at the country’s dominance over current military arrangements under NATO”.

Mr Bassett also pointed to Mr Macron’s controversial description of NATO as a “dead brain”, which ruffled feathers in Washington.

He added: “As the United States becomes increasingly suspicious of foreign adventurism, some within the EU want to fill the void left by Uncle Sam.

“To do this, they want a European army, with a large European military-industrial complex to support it. ”

In Ireland, where Mr Varadkar’s Fine Gael and current Taoiseach Micheal Martin are both enthusiastically pro-EU, there has nevertheless been some denial, Mr Bassett said.

He explained: “There are many in Ireland who think that the demands for a future European army are just scary stories.

“Former EU Minister Lucinda Creighton even called reports of an EU army ‘pathetic’ in the Irish Sunday Times edition of May 7, 2019.”

However, he said: “Yet this is completely contrary to the evidence.

“In fact, the proposal to militarize the EU is receiving growing support among establishment figures in continental Europe. ”

Last year, the media reported the “joy” of former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at the news that Mr Macron and Ms Merkel had expressed their support.

Mr Bassett added: “On November 13, Merkel, speaking to the European Parliament, expressed unambiguously her support for a ‘real, real European army’.

“It echoed Macron’s strong commitment to a military wing of the EU.

Macron had, somewhat ridiculously, earlier called for a European army to protect the EU from Russia, China and the United States, prompting a sharp rebuke from President Trump. ”

Ms Merkel returned to the theme during a ceremony to mark a new friendship treaty between France and Germany, signed in Aachen last January.

Now, with the departure of the British, the push for a European army will be much more difficult to stop

Ray Bassett

Mr Bassett said: “She described the treaty as another step forward towards the creation of a European army.

“The main opponent of an EU military weapon has always been the UK.

“Former Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly denounced the idea.

“Now that the British are leaving, the push for a European army will be much more difficult to stop. “
