Tesla had generated a huge buzz in November 2019 by removing the hoods of the Cybertruck, its electric pickup that claimed to have unparalleled capabilities and an electric heart. It was billed as a vehicle with the performance of a sports car and the towing power of a pickup. Its rather unconventional design divided opinions right in the center, but there was simply no way to stop all the talk, demands, discussions and debates. Admittedly, the Cybertruck was unlike anything else and CEO Elon Musk is aware that Tesla may be in uncharted territory with it and in the end it could turn out to be gold or glub. In a recent interview, he admitted that no market research backs up the Cybertruck, but in case it doesn’t have the desired impact, he has a back-up plan in place.

According to the interview published in Automotive News, Musk referred to the thought process that followed the Cybertruck. “We just made a car that we thought was great and that looks super weird. I just wanted to make a futuristic battle tank – something that could come out of Blade Runner or Aliens or something but that was also very functional, ”he told me.

When asked what would happen if the vehicle were to flop, Musk reportedly said a more conventional truck would be the next step. “There are a lot of normal trucks that look pretty much the same; you can hardly tell the difference. And of course, we could just make a copier truck; it’s easy. So this is our fallback strategy. “

For those who have followed Tesla and especially Musk, it’s no surprise that the electric vehicle maker has taken a completely unconventional approach when it comes to the Cybertruck. Tesla is known to be unconventional, and Musk’s rather eccentric style has often been questioned by critics. And yet, the California-based company is at the pinnacle of the electric vehicle world and has prompted established auto players to rethink their conventional methods of product development and doing business. Musk is one of the richest people in the world and nothing seems to stop him.

The Cybertruck has the potential to chart Tesla’s future course in the times to come. The official release of the vehicle is slated for late 2021 and the popularity is such that even Dubai Police have made a reservation. But Cybertruck – which will be manufactured at Tesla’s next plant in Texas – cannot on its own decide the fate of Tesla, a company that moves forward in a rapidly changing automotive world.
