Egan Bernal survives crash-marred Tour de France opening as Sivakov digs

The reigning champion Egan Bernal managed to take the first wet stage of the Tour de France without crashing and in one piece on Saturday, while around him several other favorites – including Thibaut Pinot of Groupama-FDJ – and his teammate of Bernal Pavel Sivakov’s Ineos Grenadiers hit the ground and were left to treat various abrasions and wounds. In the case of Bahrain McLaren driver Rafa Valls, a fractured femur following an accident on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice just three kilometers to go has already ended his Tour, while John Degenkolb of Lotto Soudal is also absent, having finished outside the time limit as a result of an accident.
