The website for booking new driving tests in England and Wales has crashed, after it was relaunched on Friday morning following the coronavirus lockdown.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) said it was aware some people could not complete their reservations amid “unprecedented demand,” adding that it was working to resolve the issue. problem.

The time slots for the driving tests were open for booking from 8:00 a.m. BST.

Many people complained on social media that they could not access the site.

“The coronavirus has severely affected our normal business operations, including stopping driving tests for several months as part of social distancing,” said a spokesperson for DVSA.

“Due to unprecedented demand for the test booking system after it reopened, we are aware that some users have not been able to complete their test bookings.

“We are urgently working to resolve this issue and apologize for any inconvenience caused to those who have not been able to book so far. ”

There were a limited number of tests available on Friday, but more will be released on Monday, the DVSA said.

Testing windows are only available up to six weeks in advance – to allow the DVSA to respond quickly to any changes in government guidelines on the coronavirus.

People have also been advised to check the availability of alternative testing centers nearby if they cannot book a test at their preferred center.

Amy Hanley-McLean tweeted shortly after 4:00 p.m. BST that she had been trying to book a test all day.

“I went so far as to choose the test center to not see any availability at any of the test centers within 60 miles of me,” she wrote.

“Then crashed again. Now all I get is the 504 error! ”

Louise Poyning described the reservation process as “an absolute mess”.

“Okay, seven hours of refreshment and almost four hours of wait is my limit,” she tweeted.

The DVSA has suspended all driving tests for up to three months from March 20 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

They have already restarted in England and Wales for people whose tests have been canceled because of the virus.

Testing is set to restart in Scotland on September 14, but locals are still unable to book a new test drive.
