Christopher Eccleston, as the Ninth Doctor, helped usher in a new era of Doctor Who, although his tenure would be short-lived as the actor would quit the show after just a 13-episode season due to a breakdown in his relationship with then-showrunner Russell T. Davies, Eccleston, has also refused to reprise the role on several occasions over the years, including an appearance on the 50th anniversary show. Now it has been announced that Eccleston will return to the role of Ninth Doctor after fifteen years, for a new audio series Ninth Doctor from BBC Studios and Big Finish. The series will include twelve full audio adventures, which are slated to release in four sets, starting with volume one in May 2021.

“After 15 years, it will be exciting to revisit the world of Ninth Doctor’s,” Eccleston said in a statement, “bringing a character I love to play back to life. “

Big Finish President Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “I first spoke to Christopher about his return to the role of Doctor at the Gallifrey One convention in February of this year. “And then the pandemic happened and the weather moved both quickly and very slowly. Over the past few months, ideas have been exchanged and discussions have taken place. I’m so happy that Christopher has decided to reprise the role with us – and I’m thrilled to welcome him to the Big Finish family as we learn about the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor.
