Departure of the Tour de France from Copenhagen delayed from 2021 to 2022: mayor – Sports

The planned start of the Tour de France from Copenhagen, slated for 2021, has been postponed to 2022 to avoid an overlap of sporting events disrupted by COVID-19, the city’s mayor said on Monday. The postponement would avoid a clash with the Tokyo Olympics and the European Football Championship, of which Copenhagen is one of the host cities, according to a statement from Danish organizers.

“I am happy that we managed to get a Danish start of the Tour in 2022. Many of us are looking forward to winning the Tour de France in Denmark next year, and now we unfortunately have to wait a little longer”, Mayor of Copenhagen Says Frank Jensen.

After being unable to agree on a start date for 2021, the race organizer, Amaury Sport Organization, offered to postpone the Danish start until 2022, which Danish organizers agreed to.

The three Danish stages, starting in Copenhagen, followed by two stages crossing the country, will take place from July 1 to 3, 2022.

Danish organizers weren’t expecting any changes to the planned routes, but according to the statement, they were now going to start talks with the eight municipalities the race would pass through.

“There is full support for the postponement of the five Danish arrival and departure cities,” the statement said.
