Defending champion Bianca Andreescu withdraws from US Open

Defending champion Bianca Andreescu has announced that she will not be competing at this year’s US Open.

“After much discussion with my relatives, I made the difficult decision not to return to New York this year,” Andreescu wrote in a statement.

The 20-year-old, who won her first major title against Serena Williams at the 2019 US Open, says she made her decision to focus on her fitness and be able to come back ready to compete at her peak level.

“Winning the US Open last year has been the highlight of my career so far and I’ll be sure to be there,” Andreescu wrote. “However, I realize that unforeseen challenges, including the pandemic (COVID-19), have compromised my ability to prepare and compete to the degree necessary to perform at my highest level.”

Andreescu has not played a game since she injured her knee last October.
