The Western Conference’s biggest game of the day was complete offensive fun. The Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets traded buckets throughout the first half. Defense was lacking for both teams, which led to a season record. With a halftime score of 75-85 (in favor of Dallas), this game saw the most combined points in the first half of the 2019-20 season. It’s also the best-performing first half of the last 20 NBA seasons.

The Mavericks have been ballistic beyond the arc. They’ve shot 11/20 from the three-point line so far, at a staggering 55% rate. Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr were the main contributors. Burke was unstoppable, dropping from 5/5 out of three. Hardaway was also phenomenal, going 4/6 deep.

With Luka Doncic’s heavy defensive cover, the Mavericks took advantage of most of the open looks they received. They’ve also been row 25 times, converting 21.

Are the Dallas Mavericks trying to beat the Rockets?

With an offensive rating of 117.52, the Mavs have the best offensive team rating of all time. Naturally, they are number one in the league. However, their defense has been lackluster. They are ranked 17th in the league in terms of defensive rankings. That’s why they allowed the Rockets to score 75 points in the first half.

They couldn’t stop James Harden, who set them on fire from all over the field. He had two three points and was 7/8 from the field. He also managed to slice the defense on several occasions and also racked up five assists. Overall, the Rockets were able to sink seven deep shots, most of them from open gazes.

The Mavericks need to beef up their defense if they are to fight for the title. They cannot afford to always rely on beating their opponents. When playing against teams like good defensive teams like the Lakers, they will struggle with this approach. If they can channel some of their offensive energy into defense, they can become an even more dangerous team.

If the Mavericks end up winning this game, they could close the gap over the Rockets and Thunder who are currently 1.5 games ahead of them. They next face the Suns on Sunday and expect nothing less than a win.
