Daily virus cases in France reach new high after lockdown

France on Wednesday recorded new cases of coronavirus at the fastest daily rate since May, according to official figures, as the country prepares for the return from summer vacation.

Nearly 3,800 COVID-19 infections have been confirmed in the past 24 hours, the Department of Health’s DGS public health division said.

“All indicators continue to climb and transmission of the virus is intensifying,” the DGS said in a statement.

More than 3,000 new daily cases have been recorded in just two days since May, Saturday and Sunday last weekend.

Several departments in the Ile-de-France region around the capital Paris and in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region around the Mediterranean port city of Marseille crossed the “alert threshold” of 50 new daily cases on Wednesday. per 100,000 inhabitants, the DGS told me.

Across the country, more than 16,700 infections have been detected in the past week.

Meanwhile, the number of people in intensive care due to the virus remains relatively low at 374.

Since the appearance of the coronavirus at the end of last year, more than 225,000 people have been infected in France and nearly 30,500 have died.
