His father, Hubert Esquirol, told him how he was on the phone at the time and heard “disturbing gurgling”.
He said Stephanie’s nine-year-old boy Eli unfortunately witnessed the fatal and unprovoked attack from inside the cabin.
Hubert spoke to CKOM about the incident and the last call he had with his daughter.
He said, “She called me to tell me the waterline was not working and her husband had fixed it.
“So she told her son, Eli, to run inside and get an antenna. ”
The father said these were the last things he had heard his daughter say before the disturbing noises.
He said he stayed on the line before hanging up and trying to call back.
“The sounds were very disturbing. An attack crossed my mind but the attacks are one in a million. ”
But sadly less than 10 minutes later, Stephanie’s husband Curtis called to share the tragic news that she had been the victim of a bear attack.
He described how he was forced to shoot the bear because he did not want to let go of Stephanie.
Curtis said he tried CPR on his wife, but unfortunately she didn’t have a pulse.
Hubert said nothing more could be done.
A gofundme page has been created to help the family.
He pays homage to Stéphanie by saying: “Our Stéphanie had a zeal for life next to no one else.
“She was the most loving and passionate mother, who always said how blessed she was to be able to be home and raise children. ”
He added, “She leaves behind Curtis (husband), Eli (son), Uma (daughter), Braxton (stepson). ”
