NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – Cyprus says it will work with France to purchase and develop weapons and jointly train military personnel as part of a defense cooperation agreement. Turkey, which does not recognize Cyprus, a member of the European Union, as a state, has sent research and drilling vessels escorted by warships to waters where Cyprus has exclusive economic rights. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Turkey’s actions and called for tougher sanctions against the country. The Cypriot foreign minister said Macron will host a summit of the EU’s seven Mediterranean countries on September 10 to discuss developments in the region.
