The long weekend has arrived and Calgary’s mandatory mask regulation is expected to come into effect on August 1.Refusing to wear a mask could result in a fine.

Businesses will be mandated to post sufficient signage provided by the city and failure to do so correctly could also result in a fine.

Calgary Community Standards Service Inspector Brad Johnson said on Friday the goal would be to educate Calgarians on the effectiveness of wearing a mask.

“It’s important to understand that not everyone will be able to wear a mask,” Johnson explained. “So there is a lot of sensitivity about this that we need to be aware of in the city.”

Transport and peace officers will also wear additional masks for people who do not have them.

“We are trying to stop the spread [of the novel coronavirus]Johnson said. “People can access these places and we can continue to operate.”

But transit drivers express confusion and concern over the regulations and who would be responsible for distributing the masks and denying service to passengers who do not wear them.

“We want to have as little interaction as possible with the public,” said Mike Mahar, president of Local 583 of the Amalgamated Transportation Union.

Mahar said the union has clarified with the city of Calgary that transit drivers will not hand out masks and enforce the bylaw.
