Saturday, Warner Bros. launched the first trailer for 2021 The batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the iconic comic book hero. In the trailer, fans got their first glimpse of Farrell, 44, portraying the Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot, one of the villains ready to wreak havoc for the Caped Crusader.

Danny DeVito played the role of the penguin in the 1992s Batman Returns, opposite Michael Keaton’s Batman – and DeVito recently praised his successor.

Talk with ColliderDeVito, 75, said he was “really looking forward” to seeing the penguin portrayed by Farrell, who he co-starred with last year Dumbo (who also played Keaton). “He’s going to be awesome because he’s a great actor,” DeVito added.

In May, Farrell teased his The batman role, calling for the opportunity to play the “exciting” character.

“To be part of this universe and just there are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon: Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, all of those things,” Farrell told GMA News Online at the period.

“The creation of this one, the character aesthetic, has been fun and I’m really, really excited to come back and explore it,” Farrell added.

Farrell also revealed that the penguin doesn’t have a big role in the film, which stars several other iconic villains, including Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as Riddler.

“I don’t have much to do. I have a certain amount in the movie. I’m not on it at all, ”he explained. “But there are some tasty scenes that I have in it and my creation and I can’t wait to come back. ”

Despite a smaller role, Farrell said the character is a challenge in the sense that “it’s something that I haven’t had a chance to explore before. ”

At DC Comics’ virtual FanDome event on Saturday, director Matt Reeves explained that the film follows Batman’s “debut” when Bruce Wayne is “far from perfect.”

“One of the things that’s interesting is learning to be Batman. It’s a criminological experiment. He’s trying to figure out what he can do to change this place, ”Reeves said. “He sees that he’s not having any of the effects he wants to have. This is when the murders start happening… and it opens up a whole new world of corruption. Without being an origin tale, it ends up touching its origins. ”

The batman is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
