Clemson was named No. 1 in USA Today’s Amway Coaches preseason poll for the second straight season.Last year the Tigers turned it into a championship game, but failed LSU in the title game. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence will look to win his second title before presumably heading to the NFL.

“You have to look back on what you’ve done – we’ve done great things and we have a lot more in store, of course,” Lawrence told USA Today Sports. “It sucks not to end as you wanted [last season], but everything will be fine. We will be back. ”

Lawrence coach Dabo Swinney of USA Today Sports said, “This is a great opportunity for him to lead and respond. He had incredible success and did so many great things. He’s going to be a tough guy to beat – forever. He is special. ”

The defending Big Ten champion, Ohio State, is ranked No. 2. The Buckeyes lost to Clemson in the semifinals last season.

Alabama and Georgia are No. 3 and 4, followed by defending champion LSU, who will not have superstar quarterback Joe Burrow this season after being drafted at No. 1 by the Bengals.

The SEC and Big Ten each have six teams ranked in the top 25. The Big 12 and the ACC, which includes No.10 Notre Dame for the 2020 season, have four teams. The only schools in the Group of Five to be ranked are UCF (# 21) and Cincinnati (# 22).

The poll is of course based on the fact that there will be a college football season. The coronavirus pandemic has already caused conferences to dramatically change schedules, and NCAA Division II and III schools have canceled their championships in fall sports.
