Chi Chi DeVayne, the energetic drag performer whose intelligence and positivity wowed her spots on season eight of Course de dragsters de RuPaul and the highly competitive spin-off All stars 3, is dead. The news was confirmed by a number of close friends, including fellow alum Ongina, who tweeted a tribute, “Rest in Power Angel! Seriously one of the nicest people I have ever met. DeVayne’s death comes days after he entered the hospital with pneumonia and suspected kidney failure. He was 34 years old.

DeVayne, real name Zavion Davenport, proudly represented Shreveport, Louisiana diligently competing for the Course de dragsters crowned. Originally seen as an underdog, DeVayne quickly got resourceful and witty when he walked into the workroom in a trash-bag gown, speaking French. His creativity and resilience set him apart from the rest of the competition and carried him all the way up to fourth place, leaving a lasting impact that made him a legend in his own right. DeVayne was invited to participate in All-Stars 3, where he continued his passionate quest for the title of Drag Race Superstar before being eliminated in the fourth episode. After his Course de dragsters raced, it continued to perform and tour alongside its former competitors. He also appeared occasionally in the offshoots of the popular franchise, such as the show’s corresponding podcast, What is the tee shirt with Michelle Visage.

In 2018, DeVayne was diagnosed with scleroderma. He was rushed to hospital on July 17 and then underwent dialysis treatment. On Saturday, DeVayne returned to the hospital, where he filmed a short video message to his followers, asking for prayers. “Keep me in your prayers. I’ll be back soon, ”he assured from his bed. Hearing the news, RuPaul issued a statement expressing his condolences: “I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Chi Chi DeVayne. I am so grateful that we were able to discover his beautiful and kind soul. She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. May his generous and loving spirit shine upon us all. On behalf of VH1, World of Wonder, and the cast and crew of RuPaul’s Drag Race, I extend my deepest sympathy – from our family to his. DeVayne not only brought joy and an unstoppable spirit to Course de dragsters, he illuminated every step with the kind of charisma and talent that made him a star.
