Timo Werner, who signed for the summer at Chelsea, has said he “looks forward” to making his first appearance for the Blues and is “ready” to test himself in the Premier League.

The German striker joined Frank Lampard’s side in July after Chelsea activated their £ 47.5million buyout clause.

Werner had spent four years at RB Leipzig, scoring 95 goals in 159 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

The 23-year-old will make his first outing for Chelsea on Saturday in the pre-season friendly against Brighton and says he “can’t wait” to wear the Blues jersey.

He told the official Chelsea website: “I am very excited. I look forward!

“I was training alone for a while when I first signed, but I’ve been working with the whole team for about a week and it’s been awesome.

‘It was strange at first [when I arrived] because you just want to work hard, meet the whole team and get straight to the point on the training pitch but I had to be patient.

“I am very happy that the league starts in two weeks and I am delighted to test myself in the Premier League.

“I am also looking forward to the friendly against Brighton to finally come out with the blue jersey. ”

Chelsea will travel to Amex Stadium to face Brighton again on September 14 for their first Premier League game of the new season.

And Werner added: “It’s a little strange playing them twice in such a short time, but it will be a good test for us.

“You never really know how the pre-season games will go, but it’s all about getting ready for the Premier League opener.

Of course we want to beat Brighton in both games, but today’s game will be a good opportunity to see how we do as a team.

“It will be a big test, but hopefully we can try to beat them today and then again in two weeks! ”
