Chelsea “could do with” RB Leipzig center-back Dayot Upamecano in their backline, according to former Blues defender Jason Cundy. Upamecano played for Leipzig, beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League quarter-final on Thursday. The Frenchman has already sparked interest in Arsenal transfers but recently signed a new contract until 2023.

Upamecano has received huge praise since Thursday’s win and Cundy has joined the list of those raving about the 21-year-old.And the specialist believes he would be a good signing for Chelsea, who are in the defensive market this summer.

“A lot of you look at the two teams, they got into [the quarter-final] as the second seed, including losing Timo Werner as well, ”Cundy told talkSPORT.

“You have big names, famous names in football in the Atleti team, but I have to say, the boy at the back, Upamecano, what a performance.

“He bought a good defense. He bought a goalie and good defenders because it all starts there.

“And I think Man United should start there too. And I think I saw something extraordinary with Leipzig and Dayot Upamecano.

“He was exceptional [against Atletico Madrid]. He can play football, he’s tough in the tackle. Defense is what I would start if I was Man Utd. ”
