“It was very successful… it’s an exciting time”: Chelsea president Bruce Buck hails Frank Lampard’s first season as boss despite ending with FA Cup heartbreak and League beat champions

  • Frank Lampard had a solid first canoe campaign with Chelsea
  • Les Bleus secured a top-four spot and Champions League football next season
  • However, their season ended in disappointment after losing the FA Cup final
  • They were also beaten 7-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in the Champions League

Chelsea president Bruce Buck reckons Frank Lampard has had a “very successful” first campaign as club manager, despite a difficult end to the season.

After joining as manager on the Derby Championship side last summer, Lampard has guided Chelsea into the top four to secure Champions League football next season.

However, their campaign ended in huge disappointment after falling in the FA Cup final to Arsenal before being beaten 7-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League.

But the Chelsea hierarchy have been impressed with Lampard’s debut season and are extremely excited about what the future holds at Stamford Bridge.

“At the end of the day, we think it’s been a very successful season,” Buck said. “I obviously think we would have been a little happier if we had won the FA Cup.

“But I’m sure the manager and the players were emptied of not lifting the trophy. “

Lampard and Chelsea will be desperate to start again next season and they have made a declaration of intent in the transfer market by buying both Timo Werner for £ 53million and Hakim Ziyech for £ 38million.

And the Blues are also looking to strike a £ 90million deal for Bayer Leverkusen and German star Kai Havertz.

Chelsea are looking to make inroads on England’s top flight Liverpool and Manchester City, and Buck is excited for what lies ahead.

“Frank Lampard is a very positive force for Chelsea,” added Buck.

“He’s Chelsea from start to finish and it continues to show. He has a lot of credibility. It’s an exciting time for Chelsea. “
