Border Force ship brings group of men to Dover

Eight boats were stopped in the English Channel and 120 migrants brought to the United Kingdom, the Home Office said.

Border forces intercepted three boats in the early morning hours and encountered five more, a government spokesperson said.

One ship was carrying 36 people, including 26 men and 10 women.

At the same time, French authorities said they had rescued 38 other migrants on Tuesday, three of whom were found hanging from a buoy off Calais.

Four migrants were also found aboard a kayak north of Calais, French officials added.

On Thursday, a record 202 migrants crossed the Channel aboard 20 boats.

Since January 1, 2020, more than 3,580 migrants have reached the UK on board small boats, according to a BBC study.

The Coast Guard said a search and rescue operation had been launched off Kent in response to “multiple incidents”.

A spokesperson said: “We are committed to protecting life around the seas and coastal areas of this country.

“HM Coastguard is only concerned with the preservation of life, the rescue of those in difficulty and their safe return to shore, where they will be handed over to the relevant partner emergency services or authorities. “

The Border Force has dealt with a number of small boat incidents

Chris Philip, Minister of Immigration Compliance, said the government was urgently working with French authorities to take tougher action.

He said: “France has arrested thousands of migrants this year and is making more interceptions today, but the route has not been cut.

“If the route is completely cut, migrants will have no reason to come to France in the first place.

“Migrants have no need or right to leave France which is a safe country with a well-functioning asylum system and to attempt to come to the UK by illicit means.

“We are determined to make this road unsustainable. “
