The Canadian Football League is said to be set to officially cancel the 2020 season after a major financial request was denied.

The league relies heavily on ticket revenues to operate, and the pandemic has had major financial consequences.

TSN’s Dave Naylor reports that the federal government has denied the league’s request for an interest-free loan of $ 30 million.

The money would have been used for a potential season played under a downtown structure in Winnipeg.

Naylor says a 2020 campaign is now unlikely as some teams don’t seem interested in funding a shortened season on their own.

“Unless there is a change of direction on this, or unless the Prime Minister’s Office changes its mind tomorrow, which seems very unlikely, I think the higher is probably what we’ll learn. a canceled season, ”Naylor said.

A final decision could be made as early as Monday, when the league’s board of governors is due to meet.
