Celtic have decided to sign Preston North End defender Ben Davies as a potential replacement for Kristoffer Ajer, Football insider understands.
Doubts are growing over the future of the Norwegian giant, who is said to be one of the runaway senior stars Neil Lennon referred to following the Champions League exit in midweek.
Celtic source said Football insider that the club turned their attention to Davies, 25, after his impressive 2019-20 league campaign.
The England center-back has entered the final year of his contract and could be available in that window.
He’s on the radar of head of recruiting Nicky Hammond and his team amid Celtic fears over Ajer’s future.
The 22-year-old Norway international has been targeted by the Premier League and top Italian clubs this year and has rejected a number of attempts by the Glasgow giants to extend his contract expiring in 2022.
He has been a staple of Celtic’s central defense in recent seasons, but was surprisingly left on the bench against Dundee United and KR Reykjavík last week.
Davies was a key man for Preston last season as they passed their weight only to narrowly miss a play-off berth.
He made 36 championships as a center-back and racked up 126 appearances for his childhood club.
Davies, the namesake of the Tottenham and Wales star who plays predominantly at left-back, also gained extensive playing experience through loans to Fleetwood Town, York City, Newport County, Tranmere Rovers and Southport .
