Canada added 419,000 jobs in July, but remains 1.3 million below pre-COVID-19 levels


The Canadian economy created 419,000 jobs in July and the unemployment rate fell to 10.9%.Statistics Canada reported on Friday that July’s job gain, added to 953,000 in June and 290,000 from May, still leaves the Canadian economy with 1.3 million fewer jobs than in February, before the start of widespread lockdowns to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The data agency said 345,000 of the new jobs created in July were part-time. Only 73,000 were new full-time positions.

Economists polled by Bloomberg had expected a gain of about 421,000 jobs.
