British Columbia homicide squad identifies human remains found in burnt out vehicle – BC News

Investigators have identified the remains found in a burnt-out vehicle taken to a tow yard in Burnaby, British Columbia, last week.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said the remains of Randy Chan, 23, were found in the vehicle.

The team is currently investigating Chan’s disappearance and death.

Police said the vehicle suffered so much damage that investigators were unable to conduct a thorough examination after the fire last Wednesday and was subsequently towed away.

Further examination by an Insurance Corporation of BC investigator this week revealed traces of human remains inside the wreckage.

The RCMP said in a press release that there will be a review of the actions of the arson investigator to see if improvements can be made to the procedures.

“Depending on the extent of the damage caused by the fire, especially in car fires where accelerators such as gas are present, it is not always immediately obvious that there are human remains”, said Superintendent Graham la Gorgendière, NCO in charge of the RCMP Burnaby Detachment.
