Britual vacationers flock to Greece instead of Spain as the busiest month for summer vacation begins.
Sunvil Holiday Group chairman Noel Josephides reported a sudden surge in requests for “last minute, flight only” bookings to Greece, and not from the company’s usual population 50 and over. “We know these are people who were probably going to Spain,” he told iNews.
It comes as Europe’s largest tour operator, Tui, has extended the cancellation of all UK holidays to the Spanish Balearic Islands and Canary Islands until August 10 and all holidays in mainland Spain until August 17. August. Jet2 also contacted customers already vacationing there and asked them to fly home earlier; send empty planes to repatriate them.
Both operators have added additional services in Greece to meet demand.
Greece has held up well to the pandemic compared to the rest of Europe, with only 3.7 new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14 days. The UK recorded 14 per 100,000 over the same period.
Elsewhere, senior French and German ministers have both warned of possible further lockdowns, and Matt Hancock said it was “very likely” that other countries will be removed from the country’s quarantine exemption list. FCO as fears of a second wave take hold of Europe.
