The 2021 Audi E-Tron, the company’s first fully electric car, will start almost $ 9,000 less than the current version and have a range of 18 miles, bringing its total range estimated by the EPA to 222. miles on a full battery. .

The starting MSRP is down thanks to a new base version of the E-Tron SUV which will now start at $ 65,900, down $ 8,900 from the current price of $ 74,800. There are of course sacrifices. The company’s “Matrix” LED headlights (which aren’t available in the US to begin with) aren’t included with the base model, as is the Bang & Olufsen sound system. Audi will sell more complete versions of the 2021 E-Tron that start at $ 79,100.

The improved E-Tron lineup comes from tweaks and optimizations, such as the ability to occasionally disengage the electric motor on the front axle when not needed to save energy. Audi is also giving the 2021 E-Tron access to more of the total battery capacity of 95 kWh. The new version of the electric SUV has a total useful capacity of 86.5 kWh, compared to 83.6 kWh. (Automakers generally limit the usable capacity of battery packs in electric cars to reduce degradation over the life of the car.)

These changes combine to bring the new EPA range from 204 miles to 222 miles. While that’s still a long way from the numbers Tesla hits these days – the latest Model S sedans can go 402 miles on a fully charged battery, with a total capacity of 100 kWh – all improvements to vehicle range. Electricity are welcome, and they are fortunately becoming a common occurrence. For example, Jaguar announced a similar increase in the I-Pace’s range at the end of 2019, increasing its total from 234 miles to 246 miles. Even the Chevy Bolt gained 21 miles of range last year in a model year jump.

Audi has two smaller, more affordable Q4 versions of the E-Tron on the way next year that will be powered by parent company Volkswagen’s modular electric vehicle platform. Designed from the ground up to power the Volkswagen Group’s many upcoming electric cars, the platform is expected to deliver better range and performance at a lower cost.
